MAROUBRA RSL SUBBRANCH MEMBER DEPLOYED TO FIRE AND FLOOD AFFECTED AREAS IN THE SOUTH COAST NSW

As a personal friend and fellow Kiwi, I take great pride to announce that Peter Singer our own Committee Member has been seconded to the Ministry of Health to provide Triage & Trauma counselling.

Be safe brother.

"The Ministry of Health has deployed a Maroubra RSL member to southern NSW as part of a Crisis team to the fire and flood effected areas.
This work involves Crisis and Trauma triage and counselling for an array for personnel ranging from young children though to the aged within the vast areas affected by this disaster.
This requires long hours and traveling to large areas from large towns to small communities.
One such area has lost 20 out of 25 homes as well as the community hub and resources.
This placement will be perpetual as long as the need is required.
Peter is also attending as many RSLs in an attempt to gage the effects this is having in these smaller sub branches."

A SALUTE TO OUR NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE

I stand amazed and humbled by the dedication and sacrifice shown by all Australian and Overseas Volunteers in the face of the recent drought & fire emergencies.

In particular, I would like to thank our own NSW RFS volunteer Phil Clift, his story in his own words below.

"The first is at Batemans Bay – I’m on the left hose and NSW Fire & Rescue are on the right trying to save a house that was directly behind us. You can see bits of pink fire retardant on my gear after we got a small bombing from theDC10 tanker.

The second was taken late in the day and we were somewhere between Mittagong and Wombeyan Caves and the crew was having a rest. We had joined with other brigades to put in a 6km containment line on the southern flank of the Green Wattle Creek fire to protect Mittagong.

The following clip is from the Balmoral fire which was also part of the Green Wattle Creek fire. I was there but I’m not in the clip but you get the idea of what we were facing.

There was a news camera man near us and at the start of the clip you can see our truck arriving at the property and the fire was very close and moving fast from right to left.

At 0:21 you can see the trees exploding and crowning – they were very big trees and we got very hot very fast.

At 0:22 in the foreground you can just make out a little structure that was used by goats on the property. I was defending them in their paddock out of camera- they made it through.

At 0:27 the firefighter who bending over is our Officer in Charge and he’s coughing his lungs up & briefly again at 0:34. The other fire fighter is Nate and I am further around to the left out of shot with the goats".

WARRAGAMBA DAM

Our day trip to Warragamba Dam was confronting, being there on a day that the weather was hot and humid just added a sensual awareness of the drought condition that we are facing here in Sydney and regional NSW. The water level in the dam and surrounding catchment area looked really really sad due to the drought.

May I be indulgent and say what I gleaned from the Dam Information Centre. "Back in the 1800's during a drought this engineering project was built by raw manpower, thousands of labourers employed to dig, hack and shovel removing millions of tons of earth, bugger all today's modern machinery they got on with it and built this magnificient structure".

Thanks to those who had foresight to deliver clean water to the people of Sydney we cooled down in the air conditioined Bankstown Sports Club with a cold beer, lunch and a flutter on the pokies.

ANZAC DAWN SERVICE

I would like to share a message wriiten by some sweet little soul left at the feet of our Soldier Memorial long after our Dawn Service had ended.

if it hadn't been picked up the wind would have blown it away and not a soul would have known that some little hand had taken the time to write and wish the soldier to come back.

Both are not forgotten.
